Schubert-Archive
The Schubert-Archive that has been continually built up and extended since 1965 is indispensable for the editorial work on the volumes of the NEW SCHUBERT-EDITION. It comprises both an extensive collection of sources and a library. The Collection of Sources
The collection includes:
- reproductions of autographs and copies of Franz Schubert's compositions
- reproductions of first prints and editions of Franz Schubert's works
- reproductions of autographs, copies, and prints of literary documents
- reproductions of Franz Schubert's (and his friends') letters
- material documenting the early reception of Schubert's works
Since the foundation of the archive, the international academic literature about Franz Schubert and his acquaintances has been continually collected. Since 1988, it has been stored in a data base. The current stock of the library comprises more than 4200 books, essays, and articles, among them the reference library of the Schubert specialist Otto Erich Deutsch. The Staatsbibliothek Berlin purchased this collection, while Deutsch was still alive, and made it accessible for the work on the NEW SCHUBERT-EDITION.
Usage
The collection of sources is liable to the regulations of the manuscript owners. For this reason, it is possible to have a look at the reproductions, but it is not allowed to pass them on or copy them.Information concerning locations of the originals can only be given, if the respective sources are public property.
The library and the data base can be used for research. It is advisable to make an appointment well in advance. Please note that it is not possible to provide any detailed information by telephone.
